American Red Cross Receives More than $5,000 from InterMed for Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Relief Efforts
14-year-old Daughter of InterMed Physician Organized Fundraising Event
Portland, Maine, April 19, 2011 —The American Red Cross today accepted a donation from InterMed for $5,275 to benefit the Japan earthquake and tsunami relief efforts. InterMed, a premier multi-specialty health care provider in Southern Maine, presented the American Red Cross with the money — raised from raffle ticket sales — today during a ceremonial check presentation held at the health care provider’s offices on Marginal Way.
The raffle was created by Sarah Barr, the 14-year-old daughter of Dr. Randy Barr, an InterMed physician who chairs the health care provider’s Community Support Group. Sarah and her father collected nearly 25 great prizes to be included in the raffle drawing. The American Red Cross sent volunteers to all three InterMed sites (South Portland, Portland and Yarmouth) to sell raffle tickets to employees on April 6th and 12th.
“The question is why you wouldn’t help,” said Sarah Barr. “The people of Japan have lost so much, and America has so much more, so it would only make sense to help. To not, would be selfish.”
“Thank you so much to InterMed and all of their employees for raising over $5,000 in short period of time. We extend a special thank you to Sarah Barr for thinking beyond her community to help those affected by Japan’s disaster. The Red Cross values the strong support from companies like InterMed and others in Maine to provide the needed relief to the earth quake tsunami victims in Japan”, said Dave Thompson CEO, Maine American Red Cross.
“This fundraising effort is a great example of our employees coming together to help those in need. We are proud of Sarah and all of our professionals here at InterMed who helped make that possible,” said Lisa Labbay, Director of Operations, InterMed.
